Daniele Cossato imagined and created a new version of Donatello's David. In his reinterpretation, the protagonist does not appear proud and victorious, but chained and forced into an unnatural pose.
A symbol of civic virtue, David here loses his pride: his face is dark, absorbed, and his posture conveys a sense of profound sadness. The work, therefore, depicts David as a captive zoo animal. His destiny is perpetual exhibition. The coffins become traveling homes. David is aware of the monotony of his fate.
This sculpture is no longer a symbol of our culture, but has become a mere attraction. Almost like a freak show forced to perform in silent melancholy.
